George Washington’s Testimony

He was NOT a deist. Deists believe that God is remote and uninvolved with this world.

Deists do NOT believe in:

ProvidencePrayerClergyWord of GodDivinity of Christ

Therefore, to determine whether George Washington was a deist, we should determine his beliefs on the 5 above-mentioned bullet points.

George Washington NEVER claimed to be a deist.George Washington repeatedly and vociferously criticized deism and/or the tenets of deism. There is only one text that can be used to argue he was a deist, but numerous statements by George Washington indicate that he was a Christian. His adopted daughter said essentially: “you may as well doubt his patriotism as doubt his Christianity”

Providence?

George Washington attributed his life being saved to Providence. He did believe in providence - not just once but repeatedly throughout his life. 300+ times he refers to Providence in his writings.

Dr. Lillback did not have time to go through all of these 5 bullet points. Therefore we suggest you get his book George Washington’s Sacred Fire or refer to the slides in the powerpoint presentation below.
