Something Happened at the Cross

Dr. Jim Garlow

Palm Sunday – The Triumphal Entry – is a glimpse of the exaltation of Jesus. The Transfiguration, The Resurrection, The Ascension.
Gen 3:15, And I (God) will put enmity between you (Satan) and the woman (Mary, humanity), and between your offspring (demons) and hers (Jesus; he (Jesus) will crush your head (Satan), and you (Satan) will strike his (Jesus’) heel."

1. The Cross
  •   Heb 2:14, Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death-that is, the devil-
  • Col 2:14-15, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. (Note: I am indebted to Perry Stone & others)

2. The Mystery of Blood
  • Gen 4:10, the “voice of (Abel’s) blood cries out…from the ground”
  • Heb 11:4, “(Abel) still speaks, even though he is dead.”
  • Blood – saved the 1st born in Egypt
  • Q: Why all the animal sacrifices?   Even in the Garden.
  • Heb 9:22, In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

3. The Crucifixion – on Golgotha, John 19:17-18 – Where is that?
  • Traditional location, Gordon’s Tomb, Others
  • Calvary (Latin), Golgotha (Aramaic….Hebrew)

  • Acts 2:29-31, "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay.
  • Took the skull to Jerusalem; represented triumph

  • Centurion, “saw what had happened”
  • Luke 23:44-47, It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last. 47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, "Surely this was a righteous man."
  • Darkness?  Death? Curtain
  • From where could he see that
