New York City: The “Magnificent Catastrophe”
[A Call to Pray for New York]

(Note: This is Article #5 in a series on the Coronavirus. This short article takes a portion from Article #4 and expands greatly on it.)
French architect Le Corbusier (1881-1965) once described New York City as “a catastrophe, but a magnificent catastrophe.” Perhaps it is. But during this season of sickness and death, we are much more aware of the Coronavirus “catastrophe” than we are of all the the “magnificent” things about New York City. The “magnificent” would obviously be – in part – the tireless medical workers and first responders. But beyond this natural realm, is there a spiritual level that we need to see as well, for which we need to pray?
The most revealing moment thus far in the five-week period of the Coronavirus pandemic was New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s claims, “God didn’t do it. Faith didn’t do it… We did it.” What arrogance. What a tragic statement! Question: Who gives this man the very breath to function every day? Answer: God.
In New York City in 1976, “Your Arms Are Too Short To Box With God” opened as a Broadway musical.
Governor Cuomo might want to consider those profound and theologically accurate words.
Oh, but there is more. This is the same Governor who – on the 46th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, of all days – signed into law that a baby can be killed up to the very moment of birth. Horrific. To add to the offense, the New York anti-human life Legislators cheered – yes, openly cheered – at the thought of their new murderous legislation. The One World Trade Center in New York City lit up in the color pink that night to honor the legalized killing. Think of it! The building should have been lit in red, mourning the blood of innocent babies that was flowing under the streets of the city! The building that was rebuilt over the “9-11” ruins of the World Trade Towers, taken out by Islamists resulting in thousands of deaths of innocent adults in the past, was lit up celebrating the deaths of thousands of innocent babies in the future!
May I pose a question: Is there, by chance, a spiritual “connection of dots” that needs to be made between the “spirit of death” released on New York State by the much celebrated “murder-of-babies bill,” and the horrific outbreak that has happened in that one state?
We all have high respect for the Empire State. I have had the opportunity to speak at “The Egg” in Albany, New York. (If you do not know what that is, google it. An amazing building.) And people tend to love visiting New York City. My wife and I spend lots of time in New York City. We passionately love that city and the people who live there.
This is what puzzles me:
Question #1: How does one explain that one single state out of 50 has more cases and deaths than any of the other 49 states?
Explanation #1: Is it their high population? Hardly. There are four states that have a higher population than New York State.
Question #2: How does one explain that New York State has more cases than any other nation?
Explanation #2: It is because New York State has a higher population than all the countries of the earth. Hardly. Out of the 193 nations in the world, there are 58 countries that have a higher population than New York State.
Question #3: Could it be because New York City is the most populated city in the world?
Explanation #3: No. There are seven cities that have a higher population than New York City.
Question #4: Could it be that New York’s population density (number of persons per square mile) is the reason?
Explanation #4: No. New York City doesn’t even make it into the top 60 of the most densely populated cities. It is possible it is not in the top 75 or so.
Question #5: Could it be because New York City has so many international travelers (thus bringing disease)?Explanation #6: No, there are six global cities that have more international travelers.
Question #6: Is it possible that New York City tops the list of locations to which Chinese citizens traveled at the time of the virus?
Explanation #6: No. Of the eight locations listed to which Chinese people traveled, New York City is not on the list.
Question #7:Then why? Why New York State? And specifically why New York City?
Explanation #7: The short answer, is I don’t know.
But I do know that the Governor and Legislators of New York State shouted for joy when they passed a bill to murder babies, even the second before birth. And this same Governor unwisely announced that pro-lifers were not welcome in his state. If pro-lifers are not welcome, who is welcome?
We need to see they sickness and death stopped. We need to see healing. What can we do? How do we effectively pray? Here is a painful question: Has the Governor – a man who is trying to save the lives of Coronavirus patients, but who signs bills to kill babies – unwittingly invited the “spirit of death” into his state and into this city? Is that possible?
We should pray for Governor Cuomo. We should pray for him to repent. Soon. We should pray for this wonderful state. We should pray for this spectacular city.
Regardless of where we live, we all love New York State and New York City. We want the Illness to stop. We want the lives of New Yorkers to be saved. Pray for them.
And pray that New York City, once called a “magnificent catastrophe” would become “magnificent” as the center of a great and massive spiritual awakening like it was in 1857-1858 in the great “Layman’s Revival.” And pray that with this new revival would come a wave of supernatural healing from the “catastrophe” named Coronavirus. Pray that throngs of healed and relieved New Yorkers would crowd the streets to give glory to God.
